Protecting Yourself against Car Purchasing Fraud
- Be suspicious of all offers. Verify the buyer's address and phone number. Watch out for individuals that only communicate via e-mail.
- Take precautions when dealing with individuals/companies from outside your own country.
- Do not accept a cashier/certified checks that are over the price of your vehicle.
- You should verify all checks by calling the issuing bank. Do not assume that because your bank has cashed the check, it is a legitimate check. Cashier checks may take up to 30 days to determine if they are legitimate.
- Be cautious if you are requested to handle a transaction through a wire transfer.
- Use a trusted and well known escrow service like escrow.com.
Watch out for fake escrow companies.
