1957 Chrysler 300 C, White/Tan, 74,498 Miles
BEAUTIFUL BRUTE 1957 Chrysler 300C is generally considered to be the most collective of the early Chrysler 300's. The 300C had a low stance, unique grille, large windshield, front door vent windows, and a red, white, and blue emblem with the 300C logo. Twin backup lights were perched above large tail lamps. The interior had the best appointments Chrysler could offer with a push-button operated TorquFlite automatic transmission connected to the standard 392 Hemi 8 Cylinder. Interiors were a standard tan color, with leather also being standard. Door panels had silver appliques, with 300 medallions on the wheel and glove compartment. Officially exterior colors were black, white, red, brown and green all mono-toned, but others appear to have been used on special orders. Tail fins- or rear stabilizers, as Chrysler called them, reportedly increased stability at high speeds, resulting in substantially fewer steering corrections.
What made the 300C even more special than its predecessors was not just its Virgil Exner styling, but also its performance enhancements, keeping it the fastest and most powerful production car in America. And one of the best handling. The suspension was designed using a revolutionary suspension system known as Torsion-Air Ride, including the famous twin parallel torsion bars, torsion bar front springs, ball joint front wheel suspension, and a host of other suspension design features. Also for 1957, the engine was lowered for a lower center of gravity and extensive laboratory testing was done for better handling and ride. The 300C won the Flying Mile at Daytona with a top speed of 134mph.: at the Chelsea Proving Grounds, it recorded 145.y mph with aerodynamic shields over the headlights and upper windshield lip, and the air cleaner and muffler removed. the 392 Hemi produced 375hp (gross) at 5200rpm, with an optional high performance version at 390hp (including solid lifters and available only with a stick shift, compression ratio 10:1). The standard 392 Hemi engine had twin Carter four barrel carburetors, with a 9:25:1 compression ratio and five main bearings. It featured a full race camshaft, mechanical valve lifters, adjustable valve rockers, heavy duty crankshaft, double valve springs, Tri-metal main and rod bearings, and extra deep exhaust seat valve insert.
A huge number of rear axle ratios were used, ranging from 2.92 to 6.17. Air conditioning, then unusual, was one option: many others were available. The relatively small 14" wheels made the brake improvements important: a rectangular duct underneath the headlights channeled cooling air to the front brakes.
The car was purchased a few years ago at Barrett-Jackson. It has been meticulously maintained to a high standard and everything on the car works correctly. The doors, hood and trunk all align perfectly. Engine, Transmission, brakes, exhaust, suspension are all in top condition. Paint, chrome glass, and trim is spectacular and the interior is the new Gary Goers leather. The A/C was recently serviced and blows cold. The radio, power antenna and Highway Hi-Fi units were all restored. Recently, it was decoded by Gil Cunningham of the Chrysler 300 Club International Inc. He concluded by saying, "your car had to be the most loaded 300C I have ever documented. I dont' ever remember one with fender ornaments."
