1970 HEMI SUPERBIRD
If somebody is looking for a rare, 1970 HEMI Superbird restored to bone-stock specifications, then DO NOT give this car a second glance. However, if one is looking for a restomod that is unarguably engineered better than the original item, then this car may just be his or her "cup of tea". This aero-warrior began life as one of only about 135 of the HEMI Superbirds ever made. Decoded by Gaven Govier, this was a 4 speed car with the famed 425 hp/426 cid HEMI engine. The prowess of this legendary motor resulted in gear heads respectfully giving it the nick-name, "The Elephant". This car, and its 1969 Dodge Daytona winged stable mate, were the first cars to roll off a factory assembly line to crack the 200 m.p.h. barrier! The Superbird was made for one purpose only, and that purpose was the domination of the NASCAR race circuit high banked ovals. It accomplished its appointed task with such success that NASCAR banned the HEMI Superbird after the conclusion of 1970 race season. The Superbird was therefore a "one hit wonder", and that is why so few of these magnificent cars were ever made, and even fewer are known to still be in existence. I acquired this car in the mid 90s from an old high school pal in Houston, Texas. He had a small cottage industry of refurbishing the winged warriors and fabricating the long out of production replacement parts that were unique to this class of vehicles. The car was essentially complete except for the wheels, radiator, and original power plant. I put the car in storage in Arizona for over a decade and started its 3 1/2 year restoration at Rockstroh's restoration shop in Casa Grande, AZ, in 2006. Since I did not have the original engine, I had the freedom to perform an upgraded, from the ground up, modified rotisserie restoration. This Superbird was repainted its original "Vitamin C" Hemi orange color. The car has only about 50 "engine break-in" miles since completion. The car, in its current iteration, now has the following tasteful (and if necessary, reversible) alterations:
-720 hp/528 cid port fuel injected, roller rocker, roller cam Indy Cylinder Head HEMI.
-Keisler 5 Speed over drive transmission with a .68 top ratio.
-Moser modified, DANA 60 type 3.54 limited slip, 1000 hp rated rear end.
-4 wheel disc brakes.
-ALTER-K-TION, Coil over shock front suspension.
-Rack and Pinion Steering!!!
-R-134 A/C.
-Center console.
-Replacement of back seat with carpeted parcel shelf.
-Modern retractable 3 point seat belts.
-Roll bar.
-Custom graphic 240 mph speedometer. This is NOT a frivolous upgrade.
-Deletion of factory vinyl roof.
-Expert body work to close original shoddy factory seams in hood, fender, and roof.
-Deletion of faux tire clearance fender humps. (Included, but not installed.)
-Retractable radio antennae.
-Trunk mounted battery.
-Aluminum racing radiator.
-Serpentine belt and billet pulleys.
-Aircraft grade braided hoses.
-Custom oversized SS fuel cell.
This Superbird will startle a Veryon, stun a Ferrari, stomp a 'Vette, and just plain beat cars from Zuffenhausen. I built this car to be an heirloom, economics forcing the sale. The price that I am asking for this car is considerably below what it would take to recreate this engineering marvel. The cost for my Superbird is a reasonable $250,000.00 OBO.
