1938 Buick Century Cabriolet. By the late 1930s, General Motors was in much the same position they held for the next 50 years-dominant in almost every price category. Most of their reputation was based on price, quality and appearance. The Buick Century was the exception-it was built for speed. In fact, the Century Coupe was the dominant car in its class in the National Hot Rod Association for 25 years from 1937 to 1962. The auto industry had one of its worst years ever in 1938 as the fragile US economy hit a sharp recession. Sales were down 40%. Nevertheless, Buick had its highest ranking since 1931, coming in 4th place, even beating GM affiliate Pontiac.
