1972 Chevrolet Camaro SS, Pewter/Black

1972 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 396(402) 4-Speed, 1 of approx. 300 cars built! This car has had a recent ground up restoration. Unknown mileage on vehicle, do not know due to speedometer was disconnected. The rear quarters, rocker panels, floors, front fenders, trunk pan, etc are all in great condition. Anything with rust was replaced. The body was taken down to bare metal, and painted right (car was painted while disassembled, all jambs look great). The paint was mixed in the correct lacquer form to get the color accurate, then the lacquer paint was spectrum-analyzed to make a base/clear color match, so it is NOT the pewter metallic found on the more recent GM vehicles. All chrome and trim were reconditioned or replaced; front and rear bumpers, rocker moldings, emblems, windshield moldings, etc. Interior was mostly reconditioned as well: New carpet, seat covers front and back, new package tray, dash is in great shape. The door panels are in good shape as well with no speaker holes. The headliner and visors look like well kept original. The weather-stripping and rubber seals are all new. Glass is in good shape. Engine compartment is very clean, new under-hood mat, new big-block fan shroud, new high performance fan, Factory GM 396/375hp air cleaner (hard to find). Trunk compartment is very clean as well.

M21 Wide Ratio 4-Speed, Power Steering, Power 4-Wheel Disc Brakes, Correct 14 code Pewter Silver Metallic (not Cortez Silver), Correct Black Vinyl high-back bucket seat interior. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL, RARE, HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER CAMARO, and should be an Great investment for ANY Classic Car enthusiast. Out of approx. 970 1972 Camaro SS 396s, I have been told there were only 300 4-speed cars built, and I am not sure how many were Pewter Silver, but I have only heard of a handful. For anyone who loves the 1970 1971 1972 1973 Camaros, this is the right car, with the right options, and the right color!

A little history (and useful information): For those of you who do not know, 1972 was the LAST year for the Camaro Super Sport (until 1996), and the LAST year ever for a big block engine in a Camaro! Due to the strike at the GM assembly plant, 1972 was an extremely low production year. 1972 is the first year Chevrolet designated a code in the VIN for the engine, which makes Z28s, SS350s, and SS396s easily distinguished. The trim tag on the cowl also shows the Z27 RPO (Super Sport Option), as well as the LS3 RPO (402ci0-240hp Engine). UNLIKE 1967-1971, A 1972 CAMARO SS DOCUMENTS ITSELF... even without a build sheet or protect-o-plate.

ENGINE NUMBERS: The legible numbers on the block are the casting code (3969854) and a CLA stamping. After doing a little research I learned that the CLA stamping was on all 71-72 Camaro or Chevelle SS 396s with a 4 speed. I am not representing this car as numbers matching or to have the original engine by any means, but the engine is correct for the car.

ENGINE: The 396/402 engine was originally rated at 240hp (with 8.5:1 compression). According to the previous owner, during the rebuild the block was bored .030 over, flat top pistons, 490 lift hydraulic cam, roller timing chain. The heads were redone with hardened valve seats and a 3-angle valve job. The Quadrajet carb was rebuilt. Correct intake and carb, longtube headers.

TRANSMISSION: Muncie M-21 4-Speed (aluminum case, wide-ratio). New Zoom street/strip clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing. The flywheel was also replaced. I am not sure what was done internally on the transmission, but the gears, syncros, and linkage all work great together. The clutch engagement and disengagement are fine as well, no noticeable slipping, and no trouble getting into or out of gear. The reverse gate works as it should.

REAR END: The rear end was rebuilt with a new posi-unit, and new ring and pinion (according to the previous owner). This rear-end also has disc brakes! The previous owner told me that it was a 3.73 ratio, but it feels numerically lower, which makes for a much better highway cruiser.

BRAKES/SUSPENSION: All New 4-Wheel Disc Brakes (calipers, rotors, pads, Russell stainless braided brake lines). All New Front End and Suspension: Hotchkis 1in drop (front and rear). Hotchkis heavy sway bar, and bushings/mounts. All New Steering (including P/S pump, gear-box, hoses, etc).

WHEELS and TIRES: 16x8 Ronnal Aluminum Wheels, painted high-gloss metallic black, with machined lip. New Riken Raptor 245/50ZR16 tires on the rear and Riken Raptor 225/50ZR16 tires on the front, all with less than 100 miles.

MECHANICAL CONDITION: Most everything is new, so the car runs and drives good. For some reason the gauges are not working properly. The last owner was in the process of replacing the cluster, and the job was never finished as he had to sell the car due to personal financial reasons The cluster that is in it is the same one which came with the car when I bought it. The last owner of the car advised me that it was brought to his attention that the gauge cluster is out of a late 70s F-body. The correct cluster would have a 130mph speedo and a 7k RPM tach, but it would not have the km/h reading. The stereo was missing when I purchased the car, but luckily the dash has not been cut, so a factory 2-knob radio should go back in just fine.
